Great article for recent grads
This was a group project in which we had to create an ad campaign for a product of a fictitious company. It had to have 4 different ads featuring the product. We had to create a logo for the company as well. Finally the ad campaign had to be presented to the class. I was in charge of designing the logo. We ended up choosing a hosiery company that would have different hosiery for each holiday. Our group created a very simple video that played in the background as we did our presentation. I created this in iWork – Keynote.
Software: Adobe Photoshop CS4 and Wacom tablet
Project was to design a poster for a band of our choice. These posters were to be printed and displayed at a student exhibition. The size was 11″x17″ and had to be 300ppi. Because concert posters are used as promotional tools, the main focus of the poster had to be the promotional value. For the DJ Tiesto poster I drew out his face in photoshop using my Wacom tablet. Software: Adobe Photoshop CS4
This assignment was to design a CD cover and a CD label for a band of our choice. In designing the label and cover we had to keep in mind the genre of music and artist we were designing for. Software: Adobe Photoshop CS3
For this project we had to create a font face poster using the dimensions 8.5″ x 11″ and had to be created entirely in InDesign. We had to pick a font face and research its history and background and create a poster around the font in question. The font I chose was Georgia. Software: Adobe InDesign CS4
For our final project in web design we had to create another online store website. My website was selling Madonna CD’s. The website was designed from scratch using HTML and CSS. I incorporated a Flash intro with some Madonna music to get the customer into the mood! I added a jquery Carousel, a script I found on the internet, to showcase the CD’s and a lightbox to the jquery carousel so that customers would be able to see the back covers of the CD’s. Javascript was used again for validation, similar to the one used in “Book Magic” website. The css stylesheet switcher was used again but using images (little squares) instead of text. The only difference here we were shown how use the include PHP function and using PHP we created a contact form. Very basic PHP but it was fun! This was one of my favorite websites – it has a little bit of everything! Visit site.

This project consisted of creating a website for an online bookstore using HTML/CSS and javascript. We had to include a css stylesheet switcher and javascript validations. Since we were able to use javascript for this assignment I decided to add an accordion script to display the books. Although I didn’t write the javascript code for the accordion (that is for programmers!) I had to figure out how to include it and set it up properly into the website. The other part of this project was to create very simple javascript functions to validate the order form. Using the internet to find regular expressions for our validation also led us to many other validation scripts that we ended up using as examples. Again this site is live on a free-web hosting site (which sometimes loads slowly) – view here.

Our first project in web design was to create a website on a tutorial of our choice. It had to be created using only HTML and CSS. I created a website on photography, since that is my favorite hobby. The websites were all put on a free web hosting site for us to be able to see it live. Software used was a simple text editor of our choice.

Another project in designing logos in Photoshop – this time it was for a high-end jewelry store called “Bianchi”. Software: Adobe Photoshop CS3
